John 2

John 2 introduces us to Jesus First Miracle when He attended the Wedding at Cana of Galilee with His mother, as well as Jesus’ zeal for the temple when He threw out the money changers who were doing business in the temple courtyard. We also witness the first of many occasions when the religious leaders of the Jews begin to question His actions. The chapter ends with on a rather pensive note when it states, But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man. (John 2:24-25, NKJV)

Bible Devotions from John 2

Jesus First Miracle - Verses 1-11

This chapter of John introduces us to Jesus First Miracle when He attended the Wedding at Cana of Galilee with His mother, as well as Jesus’ zeal for the temple when He threw out the money changers who were doing business in the temple courtyard.

Jesus in Temple - Verses 12 - 17

Jesus in Temple covers the next five verses of this chapter. Because our houses of worship are so unlike the temple, and because we do not sacrifice oxen, sheep, and doves for the forgiveness of our sins, this passage is a little difficult for us to understand. The Jewish leaders could certainly argue that they had every right to offer animals for sacrifice. After all, people often had to travel a long distance to come to the temple and sacrifice to God; must they also bring their sacrificial animals with them on the journey? Was it not easier for them to travel unencumbered, and then purchase the animals they needed once they reached Jerusalem?

The Misunderstood Jew - Verses 18 - 22

Even from the beginning Jesus was the misunderstood Jew. The Jews were beginning to take note of this man Jesus, as his fame began to spread. Yet, when they dialogued with Jesus, they totally misunderstood his answers to them.

John Chapter 2 - Verses 23 - 25

John Chapter 2 concludes with the provocative words, "He knew what was in man." How many millions of dollars are spent on the study of man, and yet how much closer have we come to really understanding what Jesus knew about man? Jesus understood what was in the heart of man, and what a difference that made!
