Be Perfect, 2 Corinthians 13. How can we possibly be obedient to the commands given by the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul? We have the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ who was willing to shed His own blood on our behalf.
Finally, brethren, Be perfect,
be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love
and peace shall be with you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
II Corinthians 13:11 & 14, KJV
In this last chapter of 2 Corinthians, Paul gives two benedictions. Within these two benedictions Paul gives a command to the Corinthian believers, and then shows the source of obedience to those commands.
The command: Perfection, Comfort, Unity and Peace.
Life
would be much simpler if perfection were possible, if we would be a comfort to
others, if we would live in unity with fellow believers, and if we would live in peace with one
another. We know that our fellow Christian believers are the most
precious friends we have, but because the sin nature dwells within us,
conflicts still do arise. Many times, it seems as though churches have a
more difficult time than do non-religious organizations.
Where,
then, is the answer? How can we possibly be obedient to the commands
given by the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul? Look at the second
benediction in verse 14.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.
The
answer is: we are not left to ourselves to try to live a Godly life in
our own power. We have the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ who was
willing to shed His own blood on our behalf. We have the love of an
all-powerful and all-knowing God who leads and guides us every step of
our journey here on earth. Last of all, we have the indwelling Holy
Spirit who guides us and helps us to understand the Word of God and its
application to our day-to-day life.
What
an amazing God we have? He not only saves us, but He keeps us until
that final day when we go to be with the Lord and live with Him forever.
God does not expect perfection on this earth--it is not a criteria for His love and grace to be granted to us. Perfection will come, however, when we leave this earth and leave our sinful bodies behind. What an amazing future we have to look forward to. Let us not be too consumed by the things of this earth, for this earth will pass away and all things will be made new!
Finally,
brethren, Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in
peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. . . . The grace
of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
