Spiritual Watchman. As Christians we, too, are living in a land of captivity; this world is not our home. The time will come when Christ will return to this earth and take His people back to heaven (their real home) with Him.
“ Watchman, what of the night?
Watchman, what of the night?”
Isaiah 21:11, NKJV
8 Your watchmen shall lift up their voices,
With their voices they shall sing together;
For they shall see eye to eye
When the LORD brings back Zion.
9 Break forth into joy, sing together,
You waste places of Jerusalem!
For the LORD has comforted His people,
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The LORD has made bare His holy arm
In the eyes of all the nations;
And all the ends of the earth shall see
The salvation of our God.
Isaiah 52:8-10, NKJV
In Bible times, most cities were surrounded by a wall for protection; at sunset the city gate was shut and a watchman would sit on the wall and guard the city. His job was to warn the city when enemies approached.
Jesus, in Luke 21, warns us:
“But
take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with
carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you
unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the
face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may
be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and
to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:34-36, NKJV
When
Jesus went up into heaven in the midst of His disciples, they truly
believed that He would return again in their lifetime. It is now almost
2000 years later, and He still has not returned. As a Christian, we know
that He may return any day or hour, but do we live as though that is
true? It is far too easy for us to become complacent, caring more for
the things of this world than for the things of God.
It
is good for us to ponder the Scripture shown above from Isaiah 52.
These verses refer to the time when God would bring His people back from
captivity; imagine the joy of the Israelites when God returned them to
their land.
As
Christians we, too, are living in a land of captivity; this world is
not our home. The time will come when Christ will return to this earth
and take His people back to heaven (their real home) with Him. Ponder
that as you go about this day; pray that God will make you a spiritual
watchman.
The signs of Christ's imminent return are everywhere; pray that when He returns, Christ will find you faithful!
