Doxology for All Creatures. Just as each of the other Psalms' Doxologies closes a book, so does Psalm 150; because this is also the last Psalm, it serves as a doxology for the entire book of Psalms. Psalm 150:1 is considered the doxology, but the entire Psalm is really a doxology of praise to God.
1 Praise the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.
Psalm 150, NIV
Just as each of the other Psalms' Doxologies closes a book, so does Psalm 150; because this is also the last Psalm, it serves as a doxology for the entire book of Psalms. Psalm 150:1 is considered the doxology, but the entire Psalm is really a doxology of praise to God.
The
Psalmist begins with a call for all people to praise God, then tells us
how to praise God, and ends with a final call to everything that has
breath.
Is
there somewhere special we need to go to praise God? We are called to
praise Him in His sanctuary, but then we are also called to praise Him
in His mighty heavens. Our praise to God should not end when we leave
our place of worship; that is only a beginning. Everything we do, say,
and think should be done as a praise to God.
How
then shall we praise Him? We praise Him with trumpets, flutes, lyres,
tambourines, dancing, strings, pipes, and cymbals. Is our spiritual life
separate from our secular life? From the moment we become a Christian
our life becomes a "song of praise" to God; it is reflected in our life
at home, at work, and times of recreation. How easy it is to get so
involved in our daily lives that we put God on a shelf; and yet, that is
not His plan. Truthfully, our spiritual life is our secular life and our secular life is our spiritual life!
Let
everything that has breath praise the Lord! Yes, even those who have
not claimed Christ as their Redeemer will, at the last day, acknowledge
and praise this God. The truth will be revealed to them, but it will be
too late for their redemption. Even so, they will praise Him. The
creatures also praise God! They, too, have been affected by the fall of
man and await the day when the curse of sin will be lifted forever.
As
you go about your duties of this day, think of this Doxology for All
Creatures, and pray that everything you do will be a praise to God!
Praise Him wherever you are!
Praise the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
