Eternal Riches. Often we speak of Christ's time on this earth as His humiliation. Why do we use that term? Christ left all of the riches and glory of the Throne of Heaven where He was worshiped and adored to become a man.
9 For you know the grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He
became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9, NKJV
It is easy to miss the profound depth of this verse. There are three significant truths being taught: Christ was rich, He became poor, through His poverty we might become rich.
As
in our last few devotions, we are not talking about monetary riches;
these riches so supersede monetary wealth because we are dealing with
eternal, not temporary, riches. Christ is everything! Because He is God,
He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end to us; in reality
He has no beginning or end. That is truly hard for us to grasp because
we are creatures of time.
Often
we speak of Christ's time on this earth as His humiliation. Why do we
use that term? Christ left all of the riches and glory of the Throne of
Heaven where He was worshiped and adored to become a man. And, not just a
man, but a man despised by the religious people of that day. Well, not
just in that day, He is still despised by the world. He lived as a man,
He suffered as a man, and then He died as a man. There is a difference,
however. He was never killed by man; instead He willingly gave up His
own life that He might save a people for Himself.
There is another profound difference. Christ was never just a man. He was the God Man. In His perfection and holiness, He willingly gave up His life for our sins. He, alone, was worthy to pay the awful debt that we owe!
That
is the key to the third part of this verse. Without the cross of
Christ, we would have no access to God, the Father. This reminds me of a
song I heard years ago:
There was no other way,
A God of Love could find,
To reconcile the world,
and save a lost mankind.
It took the death of His
Own Son upon a tree,
There was no other way,
But Calvary.
Only
through Christ can we gain the eternal riches of Glory which so
supersede anything this world can offer us. Pray today that through
Christ's poverty you will become rich in Him.
