Father-Son Moment. What is the most important thing that you
want to pass on to your children? If you knew your days were only a few
in number, and you had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with each
family member, what would you say? What would you tell them is the most
important thing for them to remember and to do for the rest of their
life?
11 Now, my son, may the LORD be
with you; and may you prosper, and build the house of the LORD your
God, as He has said to you. 12 Only may the LORD give you wisdom and
understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep
the law of the LORD your God. 13 Then you will prosper, if you take care
to fulfill the statutes and judgments with which the LORD charged Moses
concerning Israel. Be strong and of good courage; do not fear nor be
dismayed.
2 Chronicles 22:11-13, NKJV
The passage shown above gives us a picture of one of those rare moments when a father (David) has a heart to heart talk with his son (Solomon). David is reaching the end of his life and is sharing with his son Solomon, the next king of Israel, the most important, heart-felt, advice that he can think of.
What
is the most important thing that you want to pass on to your children?
If you knew your days were only a few in number, and you had the
opportunity to spend a few minutes with each family member, what would
you say? What would you tell them is the most important thing for them
to remember and to do for the rest of their life?
This is the advice that David gave to Solomon.
Then you will prosper, if you take care to fulfill the statutes and judgments with which the LORD charged Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and of good courage; do not fear nor be dismayed.
Notice
that he said this after he acknowledged that Solomon did not have the
strength to do any of this by himself. Look at verse 12,
Only may the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the LORD your God.
The
most important advice that David could give to his son, Solomon, was,
get spiritual understanding, and oh, by the way, the only way to get it
is to go to God, Himself, and ask!
Let's take a little peek into the future and see if Solomon heeded David's advice.
At
Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said,
“Ask! What shall I give you?” 6 And Solomon said: . . . . give to
Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may
discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great
people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3: 5b and 9)
What
will your Father-Son Moment or Mother-Daughter Moment be like at the
end of your life? Pray that God will grant to you and to your children
after you spiritual understanding.
