Gladness in Your Heart. For the Christian, though the world may be desolate and negative, we are able to see beyond the things surrounding us by looking into the light of Christ.
6 There are many who say,
“Who will show us any good?”
LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.
7 You have put gladness in my heart,
More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.
8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:6-8, NKJV
We live in a very desolate and negative world.
There are many who say, “Who will show us any good?”
How then does the Christian respond? We look to Christ who alone has put light and gladness in our hearts.
For
the Christian, though the world may be desolate and negative, we are
able to see beyond the things surrounding us by looking into the light
of Christ. Yes, life is truly hard on this earth, but there is a purpose
in everything that happens. We may not understand what that purpose is,
but we know that God maintains and controls everything. His plan is a perfect plan which will lead His people into His Glory.
However, that sounds very easy, but we all know that when we are in the middle of great difficulties it is not easy advice to follow. Is it true that Christ bears our sorrows? Is it true that Christ, Himself, wraps His love and care around us when everything in our life seems to be falling apart?
Could it be that the very reason God allows trials and difficulties to come into our lives is so that we may experience that personal, deep, love of Christ. When one observes older Christians, one often sees great peace and joy. Why is that? The older believers have been through the deep valleys of life--even the valley of the shadow of death. In the middle of dark times, they experience first hand the joy and comfort given to them by Christ.
The
Psalmist recognized that true joy from Christ was better than any
riches here on earth that he could imagine. Look at the true peace that
knowledge brought to him.
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Only
in Christ can we have such peace and confidence. What should we do
when we wake up in the middle of the night with worry? Pray to Christ
to give us peace; turn everything we face to Him, and ask for wisdom
to deal with everything in obedience to Him. True peace comes from
giving all of our problems to Christ. He alone can put gladness in our
hearts.
