John 14 continues Jesus' upper room discourse. Encouraging the disciples with news that mansions in heaven awaited them, He discussed His soon departure. Yet though He would soon leave them, He promised to send the Holy Ghost who would be a Comforter and Guide to them.
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:1-3, King James Version
Mansions in Heaven - Verses 1-3
Mansions in Heaven! As we continue the Upper Room Discourse between Jesus and His disciples in John 14, Jesus explains to the disciples that it is necessary for Him to leave them shortly. "In my Father's house are many mansions . . . I go to prepare a place for you. |
Jesus said, in this chapter, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me." The poor disciples! There was so much they did not understand. What did Jesus mean by these words? The way to what or where? Was Jesus only speaking to His disciples, or is He speaking to us in this 21st century as well? These are important questions that each of us needs to understand! |
The Father In Me - Verses 7-11
The Father in Me! If you will remember, Jesus had just told His disciples that He was the way, the truth, and the life. Now, He continues His discourse by saying something even more perplexing. He told them, in essence, that He is God, for He told them that if they knew Him, then they already knew the Father as well! |
Little did the disciples understand the power of the name of Jesus. As this chapter continues, Jesus explained to them that anything they would ask the Father in His name, the Father would do! |
Another Comforter - Verses 15-18
Another Comforter. The time was drawing short; Jesus knew that soon He would be leaving the disciples, but He promised that He would not leave them comfortless! In the same way, Jesus never leaves nor forsakes us in this, the 21st century! How important for us to remember that He is by our side 24/7! It is also important for us to realize that just as Jesus experienced more pain and grief than we can imagine while He was on this earth, He certainly does understand our need to be encouraged! |
Jesus In Us! How can that be? How amazing that, not only did Jesus remember to send the Holy Spirit to comfort us, but that the Holy Spirit would actually live in the heart of every believer. He promised us, in John 14, "Ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you." |
Word of the Father - Verses 21-24
Word of the Father. Jesus tells us in John 14, that he who loves God keeps His commandments. Those who are of the world see and obey God's Word because they love God. Those who are not of God, not only do not obey Him, but neither do they understand Him or His Word! |
Troubled Heart! Upon learning that Jesus would not be with them much longer, the disciples were deeply disturbed. To comfort them, Jesus not only promised the coming of the Holy Ghost as their comforter, but He also said those beautiful words, "Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." |
Jesus Was Leaving - Verses 28-31
Jesus was leaving! Yet, not only was He leaving, but He had some very disturbing words for His disciples. The prince of this world was coming! What did that mean, and how would it affect them? |
