In John 7, the Lord Jesus Christ interacts with the people causing them to face their own fear, unbelief, and pride. First confronted by unbelief in His own family, Jesus is then challenged by the Pharisees and by the people. Who is this man and where is He going? Could this be the Christ?
40 Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.”
But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
John 7:40-44, NKJV
Unbelief - Verses 1-7
No matter how difficult things seem to get, there is always family, right? For the Christian this is not always the case. It was certainly not true for Jesus, as we read in this chapter. |
Fear - Verses 8-13
Why did Jesus go to the feast secretly rather than to attend with His brothers? Was Jesus truly afraid, or was He choosing the time for His arrest and consequent death? |
Pride - Verses 14-18
Sometimes the simple truths are the most profound. Such is the case in the words of Jesus spoken in this chapter. Remember, Jesus went up to the feast privately, so as to not bring attention to Himself. |
Righteous Judgment - Verses 19-24
Already, the Jewish leaders were seeking to kill Jesus, but what crime has He committed? Though not recorded in the book of John, the account of Jesus' healing on the Sabbath is recorded in other Gospels. |
I Know God - Verses 25-30
As shown in these verses, there was much confusion about Jesus. As He spoke, some questioned whether or not this was the man whom the Jewish leaders were trying to kill. |
Going Where? - Verses 31-36
The crowds were truly confused by Jesus words when He told them that in a little while I will be leaving you. What could Jesus mean by these words? Was he going to leave them and go to teach the Greeks? |
Rivers of Living Water - Verses 37-44
Jesus promised to the people rivers of living water. How could that be? To what was Jesus referring? This promise is still valid to us today in the 21st century! |
Deception or Deliverance? - Verses 45-53
The Bible recognizes two classes of people, no matter what their race or economic circumstances--believers and non-believers. Never is that more clear than in this passage from John 7. |
