Peace in the Land. Peace in the Land, Leviticus 26-27. Peace is a popular subject. God spoke to Moses about this very subject in Leviticus 26.
3 “If you walk in my statutes
and observe my commandments and do them, 4 then I will give you your
rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the
trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 Your threshing shall last
to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to
the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell
in your land securely. 6 I will give peace in the land, and you shall
lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful
beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land. 7
You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the
sword. 8 Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall
chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
9 I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will
confirm my covenant with you. 10 You shall eat old store long kept, and
you shall clear out the old to make way for the new. 11 I will make my
dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk
among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. 13 I am the
Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should
not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made
you walk erect.
Leviticus 26:3-13, English Standard Version
Peace is a popular subject, especially world peace. Yet no matter how many world peace summits there have been, it still seems like an elusive dream. What does it take to have peace in the land? Why is that?
God spoke to Moses about this very subject in Leviticus 26. Look at the amazing promises God gave to the Israelites:
I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield
its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 Your
threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest
shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and
dwell in your land securely. 6 I will give peace in the land, and you shall
lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from
the land, and the sword shall not go through your land.
Who is this God who made such promises?
11 I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you.
12 And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my
people. 13 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your
yoke and made you walk erect.
We
hear that nothing is free, so what price do the Israelites need to pay
to make peace a reality in their land? The answer is very simple: obedience. God called
them to be obedient to His commands. But, the price was too high! We
know that the Israelites continually disobeyed God, even to the point of
worshiping other gods.
How
does this relate to us today? Do the same promises hold true for us?
The answer is two-fold; we are part of the nation in which we live, and
will therefore suffer for the sins of that nation even if we ourselves
do not follow their practices. However, God will never leave nor forsake
His own people who purpose, by His grace, is to live obediently before
Him.
Though
we pass through the fire, God will always be there with us. This is only
our temporary place of abode; every single promise made to the
Israelites, and more, will be ours when we enter the gates of Heaven to
live with Christ forever! Then, there will be peace in the land!
Now that should put a skip in your step and a smile on your face.
