Prayer of Moses, Numbers 14-15 & Psalm 90. Think of this God we serve! Before the mountains were brought forth - from everlasting to everlasting He is God. Even from our lowly position, God is our fortress and strength.
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God...
12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom...
15
Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many
years as we have seen evil. 16 Let your work be shown to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord
our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes,
establish the work of our hands!
Psalm 90:1-2, 12, and 15-17, English Standard Version
In Numbers 14-15, we have the account of the Children of Israel rising up against Moses. Being afraid to go into the land where the giants lived, they were ready to stone Moses and go back to Egypt.
In response God was ready to destroy the faithless Children of Israel. Moses and Aaron then fell on their faces before God on behalf the the Israelites. God, then, determined that these Israelites would wander in the wilderness for forty years--one year for each day that the spies searched through the land.
Who is this man Moses, whom God has appointed to lead His people? The prayer of Moses (Psalm 90) gives us much insight into the basis for Moses' faith in God.
Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the
mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Think of this God we serve! Before the mountains were brought forth - from everlasting to everlasting He is God. Where does that put us in the bigger picture of life? And yet, even from our lowly position, God is our fortress and strength. He cares about us!
Moses knew that he could never have led the people of God, unless God was with him every step of the way. How did Moses end his prayer?
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our
hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!
God has a purpose for each of us, a work that we have been appointed to do. That work is the very reason we are here; the very reason we are alive! Is that what is uppermost in your thoughts as you rise each morning to live that day?
How differently would we live each day if from the moment we are awake until the moment we retire for the night, we would say, as in this Prayer of Moses,
Establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!
God has put you exactly where you are that you may fulfill His purpose for your life. How amazing is that?
