A Bible Devotion from Psalm 121
The Lord Is Your Keeper
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
Psalm 121, NKJV
Psalms 121 is an excellent Psalm to memorize; it is short and one concept logically follows the other making it easier to memorize. I memorized this Psalm in Sunday School when I was ten years old (believe me, that was a long time ago). Throughout all of my life it is perhaps the Psalm I have remembered and applied to my life more than any other. What does it really mean that the Lord is our Keeper? In beautiful poetic stye, the Psalmist answers this question.
Where do we go for help? Throughout history, we know that this question was answered in a mulitude of ways by diiferent people. Some have gone to nature, and worshiped the sun, moon, mountains, trees, etc. as their gods. But, their gods were not able to help them. Some cultures gave their gods human characteristics like arrogance, pride, jealousy, anger, etc. and man was left with the tragic rusults of the gods warring among each other. There was not much help there either. Where is the only place we can go for help? Look at Psalm 121, Our help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. As the creator of this world, and also of us, only the Lord is able to quickly come to our aid.
How does the Lord watch over His people? He won't even allow your foot to be moved, and He never sleeps. We have God's help 24/7. Is this protection only from our enemies around us? No, God is our keeper and He shades us so that we are protected even from the forces of nature. The sun will not smite us by day nor the moon by night. KJV
What others ways does God help us? He directs our paths and keeps us from evil; He keeps us when going out or coming in. How long? Even forevermore!
Why do we go to the Lord for help? We go to the Lord because He is our Keeper, in all areas of life and forevermore. Praise God!
Pray today that, as was expressed in Psalm 121, you will be comforted by the knowledge that, as a child of God, He will keep you wherever you go, wherever you are, from now and forevermore.
