A Bible Devotion on Psalm 148
Praise the Lord!
1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
praise him in the heights!
2 Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his hosts!
3 Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars!
4 Praise him, you highest heavens,
and you waters above the heavens!
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord!
For he commanded and they were created.
6 And he established them forever and ever;
he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all deeps,
8 fire and hail, snow and mist,
stormy wind fulfilling his word!
9 Mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars!
10 Beasts and all livestock,
creeping things and flying birds!
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
12 Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!
13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for his name alone is exalted;
his majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up a horn for his people,
praise for all his saints,
for the people of Israel who are near to him.
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 148, NKJV
Psalm 148 is a glorious Psalm of praise to the Lord! There is no doubt, after reading this Psalm, that God alone is to be praised above all, for there is no other one like Him. Not only are we commanded to praise the Lord, but all of creation, from the heavens above to the earth beneath, are called to praise Him.
Verses 1-4 call upon the heavens and the angels to praise the Lord. Even the sun, moon, and stars to the highest heavens are included in this summons. God is worthy to be praised, and it is right that He is to receive praise from His creation because He commanded and they were created. Mankind has struggled with this truth; we sometimes find it easier to worship the things God created rather that worship Him, the Creator.
Praise for God, however, does not end there; read Psalm 148 verses 7-12. Praises are now called for from the earth including: sea creatures, all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind, mountains and hill, fruit trees and cedars, beasts and livestock, creeping things and flying bird. kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth, young men and maidens, old men and children. Praise is always worthy coming from the lesser to the greater; the Psalmist leaves no doubt that God is God; His is above all creation including plants, creatures, and all mankind.
God is not of the earth; His name alone is exalted; His majesty is above earth and heaven. Though He is God, yet He did not forget His people. He provided a means for them to come to be with Him forever in His dwelling place. He has raised up a horn for His people, praise for all His saints, for the people of Israel who are near to Him.
Praise the Lord!
Pray today that your heart and soul will be filled with praise to the Lord, for He alone is worthy of your praise.
