A Bible Devotion from Psalm 53
Oh, that the Salvation of Israel would com out of Zion
The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God," They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. Every one of them has turned aside; they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, no, not one. . . . Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When God brings back the captivity of His people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.
Psalm 53:1-3 and 6, NKJV
I remember a time in the 1970's when "God is Dead" signs were carried around by many. Was that a new thought just for their time? No. Even here in David's time many said, "There is no God." Just because they believed that, did it make it any less true?
Take that thought with you everywhere you go. Truth does not disappear in the face of unbelief! True Christians will always be in the minority; wide is the way that leads to destruction, but narrow is the gate that leads to heaven. Our country was established on democracy, and today our country seeks to spread that democracy to other nations. Democracy may be good for a government, but is it good when it comes to religion?
Our relationship to God comes before our relationship to any country in which we reside. In many cases both in the past and in the present, that attitude causes Christians to be persecuted, maybe even killed for their faith.
Who was David speaking of in Verse 6? Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! David was looking forward to the Messiah, who would take the people out of captivity. That Messiah has come. Christ Jesus has freed us from the captivity of sin; our true home is now in heaven--we are just strangers here!
Pray today that you would remain strong even in the face of persecution; pray also for those Christians around the world who are persecuted even to the point of death for their faith.
