Sword of the Spirit. What is a soldier (think Bible times) without his sword? I suppose that today the sword would be various weapons. What would a soldier be without weapons? Yet, as believers, we often go about our lives, many times for days on end, without the sword which has been given to us by God. What is this sword? The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Ephesians 6:17, NKJV
What is a soldier (think Bible times) without his sword? I suppose that today the sword would be various weapons. What would a soldier be without weapons? Yet, as believers, we often go about our lives, many times for days on end, without the sword which has been given to us by God. What is this sword? This sword is the Word of God.
Notice that it is not just a sword, but, rather, it is the Spirit's sword. How far would we get in our understanding of the Word of God without the aid of the Spirit? Is it no wonder that people of the world read the Bible and yet do not come to the full knowledge of the truth? Without the aid of the Spirit, the Word of God is foolishness to us.
How important was the Word of God to the Old and New Testament saints? Here are a few examples from the Bible. All verses are in the New King James Version.
As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
Psalm 18:30
In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?
Psalm 56:4
Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord!
Psalm 119:1
Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
Proverbs 30:5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
Is the Word of God important in the life of the believer? Oh, yes! The Word of God is the lifeblood of the believer. Go then, today, and take up the the Spirit's sword. Study it, memorize it, meditate upon it, and pray that God will weave His Word into your life in such a way that you are a walking testimony to the world of all that God has done for you.
