The Lord is God, Deuteronomy 3-4. What is our Promised Land? The Israelites were led into an imperfect land, tainted by sin, but our Promised Land will be totally untouched by sin.
32 “For ask now of the days
that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man
on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such
a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. 33 Did
any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the
fire, as you have heard, and still live? 34 Or has any god ever
attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another
nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand
and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the
Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 To you it was
shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other
besides him. 36 Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might
discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you
heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved
your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of
Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, 38 driving out before
you nations greater and mightier than yourselves, to bring you in, to
give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39 know
therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in
heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40 Therefore
you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you
today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you,
and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is
giving you for all time.”
Deuteronomy 4:32-40, English Standard Version
The Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
Look at the words of Moses in Deuteronomy 4:32. “For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of."
Sometimes our familiarity with the account of God leading His children from Egypt to the Promised Land takes away the import of what really happened. But just think of what we have read, and ask if these same words do not apply to you as well.
35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him. 36 Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, 38 driving out before you nations greater and mightier than yourselves, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39 know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
What is our Promised Land? The Israelites were led into an imperfect land, tainted by sin, but our Promised Land will be totally untouched by sin. It will be perfection that we cannot even fathom while we live on this earth.
Do you believe that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath, and that there is no other? Does your life reflect that belief? That is the real challenge for the Christian today. How do we live in a world completely corrupted by sin, and yet maintain a Christ-like life?
Only by the grace of God can we live faithfully before Him. That life comes from the heart; a heart completely filled with love and devotion for Christ, who saves us and keeps us through His own blood shed on the cross for our sins.
“For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of."
By the grace of God, may our familiarity with these verses from Deuteronomy 4 not eclipse their meaning in our lives. May we live this day in awe of this amazing God we serve. Truly, everything recorded in the book of Deuteronomy came to pass and this is the same God we serve today. Nothing in our lives is beyond His help. He does, indeed, hear and answer our prayers to Him.
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
