Wisdom from God
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
James 1:5-6, ESV
Wisdom from God, what does that mean? The world speaks much about knowledge and education, but is that how we receive wisdom?
True wisdom is a gift of God. We can gain knowledge through books and studying, but wisdom only comes from God. How can I make such a bold statement. In looking at wisdom, let us look at some Bible passages on this subject. The Bible is profuse with verses on wisdom, so we will only look at two.
John 16:13
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
What is truth? In John we find that truth comes from the teaching of the Holy Spirit. He lives within the true believer and He guides him into truth. In other words to understand what is truth we must go to the Word of God. We must fall before Christ with our entire heart and soul, declare our sin which makes us unworthy of God, and ask His forgiveness. To the one who truly does this, committing his entire life and soul to God, the Spirit will come in and guide him in all truth. Wisdom understands truth! How amazing is that.
James 1:5
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
It is hard for us to fathom such a close relationship to God, but that is what we have in Christ. We are able to go directly through Him through prayer. The Lord Jesus Christ has broken the barrier between sinful man and perfect God. Christ sits at the right hand of God and makes intercession for His people.
What is the state of those without God? The Bible has some very pointed things to say about those without God.
Proverbs 28:26
Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool,
but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
Here we find that those who trust in their own minds are fools! Though we may attain much knowledge and understanding through our studies, we can only walk in wisdom through God.
What of those who doubt? James 1:6 states, 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
Following Christ is a complete commitment. Should we really doubt God? The God who created this world and our universe understands all things. Nothing to Him is Impossible apart from sin. Our access to Him is absolutely amazing.
Let us, then, not be like those who believe one moment and then doubt the next. Those who do so are like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. If you find yourself in that category, cry out to God and ask Him to give you peace in your relationship with Him.
This world is so tempting in its treasures, talents, and promise of great things. But what do those great things even mean apart from Christ. If we are not believers in Christ, we will not spend eternity with Him. Let us not be like that child who eats all of his candy in one day instead of parsing it out and then finds himself to be quite ill.
Let us not bow down to the gods of this world and then lose out on eternity. Let us not doubt, but trust in Christ completely!
We have just begun in our study of the book of James, and yet we have already discovered some very profound things. As we continue through this book, we will find that as we let these truths flow over our very soul, we will not be the same people. Our walk will Christ will be enriched and delightful!
Let us take hold of wisdom from God. Only He can give us peace and contentment!
God bless you,
Linda
