The Woman at the Well is a continuation of our study of the Gospel of John, chapter 4. We enter into another fascinating conversation that Jesus had, this time with a Samaritan woman. Remember, Jesus sat down here to rest while his disciples left to buy food. While he was sitting there a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
(John 4:7-14, King James Version)
We enter into another fascinating conversation that Jesus had, this time with a Samaritan woman at the well. Remember, Jesus sat down here to rest while his disciples left to buy food. While he was sitting there a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well.
While sitting there, Jesus asked her to give him a drink of water. She replied in astonishment, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria?
From here, Jesus turns the conversation into spiritual things. If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith unto thee, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
The woman, not understanding what Jesus meant, asked Him how He could draw water without a cup. She then continued, Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself?
Jesus said, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Living water! This living water was not just for the woman at the well; it is still available to us today! Jesus Christ gives us living water that courses through our bodies, causing His people to grow more and more like Him. You see, we are not just like the unsaved around us--they have no living water within them.
How quickly we try to run after the people and things of the world, but in reality, they should be running after us!
This reminds me of a song from the 60's.
“I thirsted in the barren land of sin and shame,
And nothing satisfying there I found;
But to the blessed cross of Christ one day I came,
Where springs of living water did abound.”
CHORUS:
“Drinking at the springs of living water,
Happy now am I, My soul they satisfy;
Drinking at the springs of living water,
O wonderful and bountiful supply.”
Go, drink from the springs of living water!
